Favorite character

Who is your favorite character in this book? Explain your reasons for choosing him or her.

My favorite character would have to be Slim. Slim was always looking out for other people and not just himself. When he first met Lennie and George he was very friendly and was very excepting. He didn’t judge them or anything and George and Lennie felt welcome to the ranch mainly because of Slim. Slim kept his men in line and made sure they got their jobs done right. Slim wasn’t a lazy guy and he was a hard working guy. Slim was just a good person to go to and talk to and he was trustworthy. George could ask Slim questions about other people such as Curly and George would know that Slim would keep the discussion between the two of them. After George killed Lennie at the end of the book, Slim just said that George did the right thing to help him feel better. Slim knew that George had to make a hard decision but Slim was there for George when he needed someone by his side. I really like Slim because he seemed understanding of other people’s decisions. Some examples were when Lennie broke Curly’s hand, when Carlson killed Candy’s dog, and when George killed Lennie. Slim was just a really nice guy to other people, and he was very inviting. People also respected Slim and didn’t have anything bad to say about him.

Euthanasia

Euthanasia is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. The practice is illegal in most countries. I don’t think I can pick a side with this topic. I think it should be used only for certain situations. I think it should be used for someone who is badly suffering and who wants to die. I think it should be used for only suffering purposes because seeing someone or something suffering is hard to handle. I agree with this topic because in some situations you or the person or something who is suffering can’t handle with the way it’s living its life. For example, if you had a dog who went paralyzed and wouldn’t be able to walk or move ever again, I think it is okay to not have it suffer and put it down. Just like in Of Mice and Men, Carlson kills Candy’s dog because it is old, blind, and can barely walk. Carlson couldn’t deal with how much suffering it was going through so he killed it. If something is suffering so much and can barely fill out the necessities of life then I think it is okay. On the other hand I don’t think it is okay to kill someone and end their life if they didn’t ask you to. Yes it would be painless but you can’t kill someone who still wants to live their life even if they are suffering.

Why do dreams fail?

Dreams fail because people don't have that strive to make them come true. In the book Crook says that George and Lennie's dream won't come true because he has seen so many men who have wanted the same dream, but have ended up just working and alone. Crook thinks that this will happen with George and Lennie until they say that they have a place in mind and have money. This makes Crooks rethink his statement and he thinks that maybe George and Lennie can pull it off. I have had many dreams that haven't come true like i wanted to be a professional soccer player. I have had this dream for awhile but it won't come true because i don't have that strive or determination for it to come true. I have been thinking that being a professional soccer player is something that i don't want to be when i am older. Some people have dreams that they know on't come true but they dream it anyway. I think people do this to have hope and be happy because they think that their wildest dream will come true. But people like me have other dreams and the dreams they once had know that they won't ever happen so they stop trying and believing that one day their dream would come true.

Place of belonging..

It is very important for a human being to have a place where they belong and where people know and love them. If you don't have a place of belonging then you will be alone. No one likes being alone, because they feel like no one loves them or cares about them. This is where a friend can come into place because friends are the people who make you feel like you belong. They make you feel like you aren't invisible and they notice you for who you are. Friends are there to make you happy and to love you. People want to belong in a place where they are accepted because then they feel like they have a place in the world. They want to make connections with other people and they want to know that other people actually care and really do love them. It's always nice knowing that maybe just one person notices you and cares for you. If you don't have a place of belonging then you will be sad and upset and alone. This could lead to depression and maybe far more worse things. Everyone should feel like they are belonged rather than left out. They should feel comforted around other people knowing that those people care and love them. Being happy is so much BETTER than being sad all of the time because no one excepts you.

What a friend is...

A friend is someone that you can trust and know that they will always have your back no matter what. A friend is someone that you can tell anything to and know that they won't judge you. A friend is just someone who loves you for who you are in the inside rather than just your looks. It is good to have a friend because they are a support system. If you are having trouble with school or your parents then a friend is an outlet to help you get through the hard times. They not only help you during the bad times but the good ones as well. A friend is someone who you have fun with and can be yourself around. A friend won't judge you or show hatred towards you. They are someone who will always be there for you and someone who you can tell your secrets to. It's good to have a friend as well because they make you happy and you know that you don't have to change yourself to impress them, because they will love you because you are you. Lastly, a friend is like your companion because they are always there for you and they are someone who you can do things you like with them. It helps a lot if they love the same things as you because those things can be activities that you two do together. If you don't have a friend than it makes life really hard to get through, and no one really likes to be alone.

Statement questions

Q- Being rich is more important than having close friends.

A- This whole statement is totally wrong in my opinion. In my opinion you can be rich and still have friends, just because you might be wealthier than them doesn't mean that you can't still be friends with them. A friend is someone who will always be there for you no matter what and if you aren't friends with them because they don't have money than you aren't a true friend. Having close relationships with people and having true friends is more important than having expensive clothing or a big house. Yes having money is a good thing but not if it's used to become a person you aren't. Being rich should not change the person you are inside or the way you act towards other people. True friends will always be there and money won't. Friends are people you can count on and money just comes and goes. So this statement that being rich is more important than having close friends is completely wrong.

Romeo and Juliet questionssss!

Why does Juliet kill herself when she could be free?

A:
Juliet kills herseld when she could be free because she loves Romeo. She doesnt want anything else in the world but her one true love. She didnt want to be with Paris, and in fact she would have rather killed herself than marry him. Juliet knew that without Romeo her life would be nothing. She would have to marry Paris or kill herself which she ended up doing in the end. Without Romeo in her life, her life was worthless so killing herself would actually set her free because she would be with Romeo in heaven and she was free from her family as well as Paris.

Was it right for Romeo and Juliet to run off and get married? Or was it foolish? Or both? Explain your response.

A: No it was not right for Romeo and Juliet to run off and get married because they barely knew each other. They had met like a day before and their love for each other was not that strong. They thought they loved each other but really i dont think they knew what the true meaning of loving someone is because they were only 13 years old. How does someone that young know that they want to get married better yet know that they love another person and want to be with that person forever. I thought it was very foolish indeed and the marriage shouldn't have happened in the first place. I thought that Friar Lawrence was stupid in marrying the two of them, especially since he knew that there was more of a chance in consequences occurring for Romeo and Juliet's actions. So overall the whole idea of running off and getting married was very foolish.

Do you think that The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is really a tragedy? Explain
your response.

A: I do not thing that the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet was really a tragedy because they took their own lives. It would have been different if they were killed by other people but i dont feel sorry for either one of them for killing themselves. It was their decision and thats the way they wanted it. It is hard to feel bad for someone who would rather kill themselves because their life isnt going as perfect as they want it to go. Romeo and Juliet were stupid to kill each other, because they were 13 years old. It wasnt just them being young and in love but its the fact that they killed themselves so i believe that since they did this that it wasnt really a tragedy.

Act 1:

I thought that Act 1 wasn’t that bad. The only thing that is really hard for me to understand are the words that Shakespeare uses. It is really hard to understand the text that he uses because I am not use to it. I am just glad that there is that blue commentary or I would really struggle. The thing that I don’t understand is how Romeo said how much he was madly in love with Rosaline, but that same night he fell in love with Juliet instantly. I think it was just funny how quickly he got over Rosaline even though he said she was his true love. The other thing I thought that was quite funny was when the Montague’s and the Capulet’s were fighting near the beginning of the scene and how both lords should have tried to end the fight but yet they tried to join in. It was even funnier since the lords are old and trying to see two old men fight would be funny. I really like it how Shakespeare compared Juliet to the stars that brighten up the darkness. The metaphors he uses are some what cute, if you want to say that. The last thing that I was kind of shocked at was how fast Juliet kissed Romeo. He had only said about 3 lines and he already had her kissing him. I think it was just amazing how fast women could fall in love with men, but I guess some people believe in love at first sight. Overall I thought that scene 1 wasn’t all that bad.
